I have been thinking about this post for a long time. Well over a year. It all started with the release of OZ: The Great and Powerful movie back in March of last year. I had always been a fan of the original Wizard of Oz movie and waited with great anticipation for its "next installment". Hot Air Balloon displays started appearing in store windows and on fabric (which I promptly purchased).

I found interesting walking paths that reminded me of what the Yellow Brick Road may have looked like (minus the yellow) and started envisioning my own take on the theme. We use to see Hot Air balloons during summer nights and mornings in Michigan and Illinois, and floating across the acres of grapes in California. We even took our first voyage in a hot air balloon in Colorado-- what fun!

I finally got around to making three tote bags for little girls with the hot air balloon fabric but wanted to take a picture of the bags being "floated" by balloons. The bags would be the "basket" of each Hot Air Balloon. Well, after several popping balloons and two trips to the Party Shop, I was able to complete my idea, kind-of. We had more balloons pop, the bags were a "bit" too heavy, it was no longer dawn (and not yet dusk) and it was getting windy. I believe my husband was able to snap this picture and while not quite the look I had imagined, it will have to suffice!

Lots of cold weather, lots of snow. Flowering bushes, trees and wildflowers are just now starting to bud or flower. I am looking forward to sitting on the patio and knit in the early morning hours, smelling the heavenly scent of jasmine just outside the screen door. It's my favorite time of year. I've been busy making a few spring sweaters for babies, delicate as the new spring flowers. I hope to have them up on my website soon!
Yes, I should be cleaning. And I am. Slowly. Methodically. As one of my New Year's resolutions, I have decided that I needed to clean and organize my workspace, which has expanded and spread to more areas of the house than I care to admit. I figure that if I clear out the contemplated projects (complete with fabrics, trims, yarns, patterns, and props), I will be more creative. At least that's my premise, so I'm running with it. While sorting a particular corner of the room, I came across a flower (prop) and a tote bag (finished inventory). In order to remove it from the targeted area to clean, I hung it on a ladder. It struck my fancy and what you see above is a very edited photo of the described scene. A nice break from the cold weather outside. Now, back to cleaning. Wish me luck!Barb Sweder Barringtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06384294650581246187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8903103511777744062.post-27738202968855637132013-11-13T09:12:00.002-05:002013-11-13T09:12:44.406-05:00Winter Hat Wreath

The chill is in the air! First snowfalls of the season are happening! This is such a great time of year. Starting with the excitement of Halloween, the family gatherings and wonderful food to share during Thanksgiving, and the gift of giving during the Christmas season. It's all so special! One thing that most people will need during all these times is a nice warm hat. I've been knitting a stack of hats, in an array of colors, sure to go with any coat or jacket. Made from soft merino wool, in a cabled pattern. Come and get one today! Happy Holidays to all!

Beautiful turquoise, tranquil aquas and soft greens. I recently finished a new baby blanket and didn't realize until I was half way through, that I was knitting with the colors of sea glass. It recalled recent trips to the ocean and the calming effect of the water.

The baby blanket was knit with Madelinetosh Pashmina yarn (75% merino wool, 15% silk and 10% cashmere), super soft and cuddly. I think this would make a great gift for a special newborn baby, something that would be saved and passed down to new generations of sea-faring babies. Available now on my website: https://barbswederbarrington.com/p-403-sea-glass-hand-knit-blanket.aspx
The humidity is waning and mornings are cool and refreshing. The A/C is being used less and less and I'm starting to break out the blankets and quilts at night. This is a nice, cozy time of year.

I've been busy lately working on fall and winter items: hand-knit sweaters, scarves and hats, blankets and soft quilts. I'm still working furiously, but wanted to share some pictures of new items soon to be on the website!
I personally don't visit You Tube very frequently, typically only when one of my kids wants to show me something "great". Well, I've seen more and more product review videos, new clips, etc. that post on YouTube and decided to take the plunge. Now for the disclaimer: How I envisioned this video and how it actually turned out is a bit different. But given my limited experience and equipment, I'm happy with it. I have to thank my wonderful "Alice", who was more than happy to follow my directions as director. I also would like to thank my crew: my son, who did the video taping on his iPhone; my youngest daughter and my son's friend, who helped with the props; and my husband, who heard numerous discussions about this video, from its inception to publication. The point of this video is to showcase my line of tutus. Every girl should have a tutu to dream, imagine and create a new world of wonder. So go pop some popcorn and I hope you enjoy the show!
I started knitting the middle sweater, a 4T merino/cashmere blend, during our summer vacation. I just loved the subtle variations of this yarn, with its greys, taupe and off white. It's called Whiskers, from Madelinetosh and is just a dream to knit with. I liked it so much, that upon my return from vacation, I ordered the same colorway in a lace weight to make the infant sweater in the foreground. Given that these yarns are hand-painted, you never quite get the same look. Different types of yarn take the dyes differently. The infant sweater is 100% merino wool and done in a sweet lace pattern. The sweater on the left, knit in Madelinetosh Candlewick, is one of my favorite. It's brighter than a wheat color and golden, but not too much. It really goes well with khakis, jeans, greys and I really love it with navy. These are such great staples to add to any kid's wardrobe for the fall. I love the simplicity of the look! You'll be able to find them on my website here: https://www.barbswederbarrington.com/c-26-sweaters.aspx

I recently posted this photo of this pretty lightweight, newborn sweater on my Facebook page. Five colors in all, in an easy wrap style. Shortly after I posted, I received a message from one of my brothers. He didn't think the mannequin did justice to my products and looked "pudgy". Well, the measurements are accurate for an "average" newborn (mine is actually an old babyGap mannequin). Ironically, my oldest daughter had been watching me take and post photos of other products and commented that I should use more real models. OK. So where do I get real models? My kids are too old to model baby products, I have no family close by and none of my friends have babies! I also like to take my photos using natural light, if possible. It's hard to try and schedule a photo shoot, not knowing whether it will rain or not, if the baby is "up" for picture taking, etc. Thus, I use mannequins-- they are usually quite agreeable.

On the flip-side, I do agree, most products look better being worn by an actual person. So, in crawls Baby P. By way of background, my kids school holds a nice service every year for all the newborn babies of families that attend the school. It's called Baby Chapel. I was asked several years ago to make something special for the newborns and have been doing it ever since. This year the school gifted all the newborns with beautiful, double-gauze receiving blankets. At a different event at the school, I had spotted a really adorable baby, sitting across the aisle from us and a soon-to-be-recipient of a receiving blanket. Cute, very well natured-- the perfect baby! I inquired after the family and to make a long story short, the family agreed to being photographed! Even more incredible, the dad is a photographer in his spare time and offered to take the pictures. A gift from heaven. The pictures were much better than I could have hoped for, and 100x better than I could have done myself. So, without further ado, here is baby P., modeling not only my new generation bib and burp cloth (see last blog post), but her double-gauze receiving blanket as well. I can't thank the family enough for giving me the chance to have a real model showcasing my products!! Thank you! Thank you!

I started making burp cloths many years ago, after my second child was born. I actually began thinking about it while my first was still a baby, lamenting about how the diaper/burp cloth just looked like more laundry for me to do in my exhausted state. I first used cloth diapers that I had purchased, embellishing the rough ends with nice fabrics and trim (Generation 1).

These evolved to wider fabric edges and more exciting colors and fabrics. Still, I wasn't satisfied with the store bought diaper. After several washings, it would start to pill, never really folded well, etc. So, along came Generation 2. I started from scratch, making my own diaper from absorbent Birdseye diaper cloth, lined it with diaper flannel and I was off to the races. It was very time consuming, but the product quality was much better and more versatile. I used them extensively after my third baby was born, as a burp cloth, quick car seat blanket, or rolled as a head support in the motorized swing or bouncy seat. I still make these burp cloths and they are as functional and pretty as ever!

Given my desire to make something new, I started out making a wrapped voile burp cloth, quilted in a diamond pattern. The fabrics I use are printed by Spoonflower, a wonderful company that prints any design you want on a variety of fabric options, with thousands of prints submitted by very talented individuals. Really, quite impressive! Again, this version is very time consuming, but quite lovely and very functional! You can find them here on my website! I currently sell them only in a bib and burp cloth set, but may sell them individually in the future. Will there be a Gen 4? Only time will tell!Barb Sweder Barringtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06384294650581246187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8903103511777744062.post-35044580766393782242013-05-07T12:16:00.000-04:002013-05-07T12:16:21.729-04:00Blue-Stripe Intarsia Sweater

When I start working on a new sweater, I usually have a pretty good idea of how I want it to look, sizing, etc. More often than not though, I usually change something, somewhere along the way. I don't like to start over, rip out stitches, etc. So, if I'm not completely happy with my project, I usually tweak it, add something, change or add stitch variations. I spent a lot of time working on this sweater, with the added work of its intarsia flowers. Because the colors I used were more soft and muted, I felt that the flowers didn't "pop" enough. So, I added beads and sequins. I think it gives it more definition, more "pop", and makes it a special sweater for that special little girl. What do you think? This sweater was knit with Madelinetosh merino lace yarn--super soft!
Even though we live near the beach and have more shells than we know what to do with, I still enjoy walking new beaches to see different types of shells. The shells found below are only about 45 miles up the coast, but quite different in color than the shells on our local beach. Deep, rich indigo blues are a reoccurring theme on Amelia Island, FL. I love the color and texture of these shells and they inspire me to dig through my yarn stash and find similar colors. Quite lovely, don't you think!
In my previous post, I gushed about my new walking foot (for my sewing machine!). Well, the quilted beauties above are just the beginning of many more quilts to come! These are made from 100% cotton voile, with a blend of cotton, silk and bamboo batting. I can't tell you how soft and lovely these are-- you just have to feel them. The quilts drape so nicely and make a great addition to a sofa, bed or side chair.

Barb Sweder Barringtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06384294650581246187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8903103511777744062.post-69657791326146753382012-12-17T10:55:00.002-05:002012-12-17T10:55:16.909-05:00The Joy of a Walking Foot

I have been wanting to buy a walking foot for my machine for several years, but given the expense, continued to postponed the purchase. A walking foot is a foot that has two "feeder" feet that push the fabric evenly under the foot as the feed dogs push the fabric from underneath. What you get is perfectly matched upper and lower fabrics sewn together, no puckering, no half an inch of extra top fabric at the end of your seam. The walking foot is the greatest invention next to the microwave, in my opinion. What makes this investment even better, is that Bernina was having a sale on walking feet when I went to buy one, so I was even happier with my purchase!! Since my acquisition, I have been sewing up voile quilts like there is no tomorrow. My arms hurt, but the discomfort is worth it when I see the beautiful finished product. Now I spend my days dreaming up more variations and deciding that the kids (at least the girls) could all use another blanket.... If you are sitting on the fence about making the investment, I can tell you that it is totally worth it and it will become your favorite foot attachment! Enjoy!
I just love this little vest. It's soft. It's fuzzy. It's hairy. It's Fun! This sweet little vest looks great with the beautiful organic cotton twirl skirt, or equally with a pair of jeans or colorful corduroys. The skirt is fully lined (100% cotton voile) with attached polka dot ruffle and the over-skirt is 100% organic cotton. Hours of twirling promised, all with a smile. The vest is cropped, has an i-cord binding and cute pom poms at the bottom of the twisted cord tie. I like it so much, I've ordered more yarn to make it in additional sizes. I hope you like it as much as I do. I had fun putting this collage of lunch bags together, an explosion of color. There are several more colors and patterns on the website, something for everyone, boy or girl (or Mom!) Insulated lunch bags are a necessity these days to keep perishables from perishing! I throw an ice pack in my kids lunch bags and drinks, yogurt, fruit sandwiches, etc. all stay cold until lunch time (and often until they come home!). The wipeable oilcloth bags are a cinch to clean and last year after year. Come pick one today!

This is my second digital ad in Babiekins Magazine. It's a really cute magazine, with a European feel. Up to now it's been strictly digital, but starting next month, they will be in print! I have a full page ad in that issue, due out in October at Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million. The elusive triple play. One of the hardest stats to earn in baseball. Only three triple plays have occurred thus far in MLB this year. With baseball quickly coming to its season end and the heat giving way to cooler evenings, our "Triple Play" is the perfect choice for a night out at the ball park. Or, if football is your favored sport, a great layer to wear to a fall game. The soft merino wool sweaters are relatively light weight but add a comfortable layer of warmth when there is a chill in the air. If sports are not your thing, these sweaters can also be dressed up for any special occasion, even one that requires a tie! These hand knit sweaters range in size from a 1-2T to a 5-6T. Visit my on-line store and snag one for your little sports enthusiast.Barb Sweder Barringtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06384294650581246187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8903103511777744062.post-52939966379831823082012-08-11T15:03:00.002-04:002012-08-11T15:04:17.538-04:00An Essential Part of Every Meal...

Kids grow up fast these days. Sometimes too fast. At Barb Sweder Barrington, we can help with that. We offer bibs for every stage of their eating development. Our Infant Bib is perfect to cover their little chests when feeding them for the first time. The wipeable oil cloth bibs tie in back and are great for new eaters. When they get older and are more involved in the feeding process, in marches the Toddler Bib, just in time! With a crumb catcher (or anything else for that matter) pocket, it's perfect to make sure that most of the food will either end up in their mouths, or in the pocket, and not on the floor (or in their laps)! Just when they've figured out how to release the Velcro closure on the Toddler Bib, in races the Spaghetti Bib to save the day (and their clothes). Our largest bib, it was designed to provide full coverage for those ambitious kids who want to feed themselves. The bib ties in the back, so no Houdini acts at the table with a quick escape from the bib. Like it's younger sibling, it has a larger crumb catcher pocket and provides full coverage of your ever growing child. All bibs come in a variety of colors and can easily be cleaned with the swipe of a wet cloth. They can even be thrown in the washer (no dryer, please). Which ever bib you choose, it will be an essential part of every meal. Bon appétit!Barb Sweder Barringtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06384294650581246187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8903103511777744062.post-78196500535729415962012-07-02T21:27:00.000-04:002012-07-02T21:37:07.718-04:00Patriotic Red, White and Blue! The Fourth of July is always such a festive holiday and brings back fond memories of picnics with friends of my parents and their kids. We didn't see them very often, apart from the 4th of July get togethers and other random visits. There was always good food, a lot of outdoor fun and bugs--flying everywhere! I can't remember what these flying creatures were, but there would be thousands of them, clinging to trees (or flying around your head!). My sister and I would love to tempt fate and fling our sandals into the trees from our perfect launch-- swinging on the swing set! It would always send them flying!! To celebrate such fond memories, I wanted to do a patriotic post filled with lots of red, white and blue! Happy 4th of July everyone! Enjoy your fireworks, picnics and great times with family and friends, bugs included.
OK, so I know it's just the beginning of summer, but I'm already starting to think and work on some fall items. Historically, I've not been much for golds and greens, but I've seen some really rich, beautiful colorful prints and deeply hued yarns, that I couldn't resist! This little sweater (I'll have to remeasure, but likely an 18mo-2T size) has a delicate picot edge to offset it's bold gold color. I plan on teaming it up with either the Liberty of London print shown behind it (skirt), or some cute graphic fabric that I just ordered, reminiscent of the old Oilily tops and skirts--boy do I miss those great outfits! The sweater isn't quite done, as it needs just the right buttons, but should be soon and definitely in time for fall!Barb Sweder Barringtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06384294650581246187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8903103511777744062.post-38311970968056324302012-06-10T17:11:00.000-04:002012-06-10T17:11:36.681-04:00Little Red Wren

OK, so it's not a Little Red Hen, and the Wren isn't even red, rather shades of pinks and oranges. But, it is a cute mini collection of sweetly singing birds (if you listen closely enough...). These prints reminded me of my youngest daughter in the hospital, just a few hours after she was born. She was cute as a button (of course) and the nurse said, "she's cooing to you-- how sweet!" How sweet indeed. Consider these cute blankets and bib for your little love bird. Matching burp cloths will also be posted on the web site.
Barb Sweder Barringtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06384294650581246187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8903103511777744062.post-67107800400181725442012-05-29T20:37:00.000-04:002012-05-29T20:37:15.181-04:00Double Decker Bus

I've been making lots of new products lately given the weather (Tropical Storm Beryl). Really pleased with this shot. I used removable wall decals that I purchased through Gilt (love it!) for the London background, plus a little Photoshop. Good idea for a promotional postcard? What do you think?? Thinking back on what we use to give my dad, it always seemed to be a pair of pajamas, yet he always seemed to wear the "old pair" every night. When he passed away, he had multiple pairs of new pajamas still sitting on the shelf in his closet. My husband always seems to give his dad a new golf shirt for almost every gift giving occasion. I'm sure he has a hundred.

Well, a few years ago I decided to put together a collection of photos of the kids, from birth to present day. It took quite a few edits and effort to follow my narrowly defined theme: only pictures of the kids during "family" activities. No school pictures, pictures of friends, etc. I wanted to be able to give my husband a gift of "just family". I sorted through 10 years of pictures on the computer and ended up with a nice, concise book for Father's Day. I made it small (about 8x8), so that it would be easy to take with him when he travels. He still looks at it frequently, as do I and the kids. Here are a few samples from our book:
I thought I'd post this well in advance of Father's Day (which is June 17th this year) so that it would give a few weeks to "make" your photo book. There are several online publishing companies that can provide this service, including Blurb, Shutterfly, Lulu, mypublisher, etc. I believe you can even buy packages at Target. I personally used Blurb and was very happy with my results. Each company should be able to give you a lead time on when you should receive your finished product. It truly is a unique, wonderful gift that will be cherished for a lifetime. Enjoy making your own memories!
